Model Booking: How do I book a model for photos and advertising?

Models are booked under different conditions and expectations for various jobs. The respective client has certain ideas and criteria according to which they select a model. They communicate these criteria to the relevant modelling agency and usually send a mood board, which gives the agency more insight into the context of the job. In general, there are two options for booking a model: Either a client has browsed through the modelling agency’s model portfolio and already selected one or more models they want to invite to a casting or book directly. It is also common to ask the modelling agency to search for models according to the criteria and send the client a selection of models. We are also active as a modelling agency in Berlin and Hamburg.

Requirements for models in advertisements and commercials

To become a successful model in a reputable modelling agency, a model must meet various requirements. For a modelling agency, it matters whether a model is booked well. Files are regularly discarded. A model must have an excellent figure, meaning slim, toned, and the right measurements. Naturally, the optimal measurements differ between male and female models. Male models can train their bodies more sportingly than female models. For them, it is primarily about having a toned and fit body, i.e., cardio training and light strength training are sufficient. Too intense muscle and weight training can make the muscles of a female model too broad and the required measurements are no longer optimal. More about requirements for models.

The optimal measurements for men and women?

Female Models: The Requirements

Female models should have a minimum height of 174 cm. Smaller models can be successful, but the chances are very low. That is why height is a crucial criterion for a modelling agency to take on a model. The ideal measurements for female models are 90-60-90 (Chest-Waist-Hips).

Male Models: The Requirements

A male model must have a slim and defined body. The minimum height is 184 cm. However, particularly tall men can have just as many problems in the modelling industry as men who are too short, as they do not fit into the designers’ collections. The maximum height for a male model is 194 cm.

Personality & strength are strong attributes for advertising models

In addition to the physical requirements, mental prerequisites and the character of a model are also important. A model must demonstrate strength, discipline and endurance. Jobs are often tiring and spread out over time. Fatigue or stress must not be noticeable in a good model. Motivation and ambition characterise an experienced model, and clients are happy to book such models again, which is very important for a model and the modelling agency. Furthermore, a healthy self-confidence and the versatility of a model are decisive selection criteria. From this complete package, the presence of a model is formed. A client tries to convey their products and services to consumers through a model. This succeeds through an optimal transmission of emotions. Emotions are awakened through the presence of a model, including their facial expressions and body language. A model must be able to slip into different roles in order to ‘sell’ the product or service to the consumer. Authenticity and naturalness are the magic words to captivate consumers and ensure the client’s concept succeeds.

Models! Job Opportunities in the Advertising Industry: Online Shop, Showroom and TV Spots

The job opportunities for a model are wide-ranging. The body is a model’s tool and thus their capital. A model promotes a client’s products and services. This can be done through various media. A model can be booked for poster advertising, magazine editorials or covers, online presence, TV advertisements, and similar. On the catwalk, a model presents fashion collections or beauty and styling products and services. Although the body is the canvas for the catwalk appearance, in the commercial area (advertising) the model’s facial expressions and gestures also count, which help to promote the sale of products and services.

Model agencies – mediation for photo shoots and the development of models

A reputable and good modelling agency is very important for a model. Although a model can work without an agency, the risk of being exploited is extremely high, especially abroad. The tasks of a modelling agency include securing good jobs (for serious, well-known clients with a good salary). The modelling agency ensures that a model is not underpaid, especially abroad where models are often paid extremely low wages. In addition, the modelling agency helps maintain a good image for the model. A reputable modelling agency also supports the model by addressing uncertainties and providing assistance with any questions. A model can have several modelling agencies. It is recommended to have a main agency and a good agency in each major city, such as Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne / Düsseldorf or abroad, for example in London, New York, Paris or Milan. This way, clients across Germany or around the world can book a model, for example, book a model in Hamburg, book a model in Berlin or book a model in London.

What is the difference between a modelling agency and a mother agency? A modelling agency is solely responsible for the booking, whereas a mother agency develops models, arranges photo shoots with professional photographers and later sends models abroad to big and prestigious agencies in Milan, Paris, London or even Shanghai and New York.

Booking a model: Prices and agency commission in Germany

The payment of a model is managed by the respective modelling agency. The modelling agency issues an invoice to the client and negotiates the prices with them. New faces are generally cheaper than experienced models. With the experience and recognisability of a model, the price of the model also increases. Prices vary from agency to agency.

For the introduction to the client, the agency in Germany usually charges a commission of 20 percent if the introduced model completes the job. Abroad, this agency commission can vary and may even reach up to 50 percent. In addition to paying the model, the agency usually demands so-called AP from the client.
