Fotomodel – Dream job: Popular & underestimated

Becoming a model: a dream for many young girls, women and even men. A life of glamour and luxury, wearing expensive designer collections, travelling to the world’s most beautiful places, meeting the right people and looking incredibly good. Who wouldn’t want that? Many assume it can’t be that difficult. With the right modelling agency in Berlin, Hamburg or Munich. But behind such a career lies much more than simply being “beautiful”.

Dream job: fashion model The path to modelling

Unbelievable amounts of work, talent and, last but not least, a bit of “luck”. No one is born a model – well, maybe a few individual cases, but these are absolute exceptions. At its core, modelling is a full-time job that requires a lot of sweat, discipline and passion. In the best case, it also requires a fair share of cleverness & intelligence. After all, even as a model, you are a businesswoman or businessman. What is basically behind the profession of a photo model?

What is a photo model? The definition of a model

  2. Play with your lips.
  3. As point 1, but then the gaze moves from (left or right) outside to the camera.
  4. You can close your eyes and ‘feel’.
  5. Now you can appear ‘tender’, ‘gentle’ or ‘sweet’.
  6. Sweet looks, then smile.
  7. Don’t forget: move your body as well

Difference: Fashion model & photographic model

In the past, there was a strict distinction between the terms photographic model and fashion model (also known as mannequin). Today, both fall under the overarching term model. So a model can stand in front of the camera for advertising shoots, as well as make a good impression on the catwalk for designers. Of course, there are different ‘model types’, that is, if a model has a good figure, a great face and a unique aura. If a model is generally too small for the catwalk, it can still work as a photographic model, but will less likely be booked for the catwalk.

Photographic modelling agencies – reputable modelling agencies

Of course, there is also a distinction made between the measurements of female and male models. Find out more here: Model werden

Requirements for Male Models

A male model should have a defined, slim body. The minimum height for a male model is 184 cm. Male models should not be taller than 194 cm to remain versatile in their use.

Requirements for Female Models

A female model should generally not be shorter than 174 cm to achieve real success in the modelling business. Smaller models can work as photo models, but they often do not fit into fashion collections and are not popular with designers, especially for the catwalk. The perfect model measurements for women are 90–60–90. (90 centimetres hips, 60 centimetres waist, 90 centimetres bust.)

Becoming a Fotomodel — The Entry into Fashion Photography

What is a Fotomodel?

A fashion model primarily works for still images — in contrast to runway models. Fashion models appear in magazines, catalogues, on billboards and in digital campaigns. The work takes place in the studio or outdoors, often under controlled lighting conditions. Within photography there are two basic areas: editorial (for magazines and editorial features) and commercial (for brands and e-commerce).

Technical skills of a fashion model

Posing is learnable: knowing which angles work, how to create body tension without appearing stiff, how to direct the gaze. Body awareness develops with experience. Fashion models who understand how to use light sources and avoid shadows are much more efficient on set. Following the photographer’s instructions quickly and precisely is at least as important as looking good.

Where do fashion models work?

Studio shoots for fashion labels and catalogues make up a large part of the work. E-commerce sets — often not very glamorous, but well paid and regular — are an important pillar. Editorial shoots for magazines offer less payment, but valuable portfolio images and visibility. Outdoor productions for lifestyle brands, tourism or sports equipment offer variety.

Application and portfolio building for fashion models

For applying to an agency, good, clean natural photos are sufficient at the beginning. Elaborate setups are not necessary at this stage. Once the first bookings come in, the portfolio develops organically. The portfolio should show variety — different looks, moods, settings.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a professional portfolio shoot?
Not essential for the first application. Current, clear natural photos are sufficient. Ideal professional portfolio images are created ideally after the first contact with the agency.

What does a fashion model earn?
E-commerce shootings often pay between £100 and £300 per hour. Full-day campaign shootings for established brands can bring in £800 to several thousand pounds.

Difference between a photomodel and a model?
Model is the overarching term. A photomodel specifically refers to work for still images, distinct from runway models, fit models or promotion models.
